Our presentation consists of new works by Alexander Basil, featuring his distinctive pictorial language exploring aspects of perceived identity and self-creation through figures and anthropomorphized objects. As a trans man, much of Basil’s work explores themes of his social and physical transition including Basil’s ongoing gender-affirming surgery. The work explores a dense overview of the layers of complex and oftentimes degrading factors of social, psychological and administrative barriers facing those seeking gender affirming healthcare.

Alexander Basil (b.1997, Arkhangelsk, Russia) lives and works in Berlin. Basil studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and The Academy of Fine Art Vienna. Recent exhibitions have been held at Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, X Museum, Museum More and his work is held in the collections of the Städel Museum, Frankfurt, Kunstpalast Düsseldorf and The City of Gothenburg.
