At Liste, we present the work of Japanese artist Yuji Akatsuka. His paintings develop through a conscious act of transforming fragments of reality and perception into new pictorial forms. In the process of creating light, expansive compositions of color and form, trust in the world, renewal emerging from collapse, and a generative impulse toward transformation coexist. Together they suggest that the very act of painting holds the potential for continual renewal. The installation foregrounds the relationships between the works and the spatial presence of each canvas.
Yuji Akatsuka (b. 1955,) is a Japanese painter known for his abstract works that explore the materiality and spatial possibilities of painting. He began exhibiting in the 1980s and has since presented numerous solo exhibitions at galleries in Japan. His work has been acquired in major public collections, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo; among others.
