The artist intends to develop a series of works based on the concept of the micronovel: a narrative form distinct from both the short story and the novella. In the micronovel, plot and characters are merely suggested—outlined and evoked rather than fully described. It is an essential form, one that invites the viewer’s imagination to fill the narrative gaps.
The artist intends to use this storytelling approach to revisit the places of his youth upon his return after years abroad—places that exist simultaneously in memory and in daily experience, yet whose overlapping images no longer align.
The series will include three installation works featuring small jars equipped with displays showing short videos accompanied by original audio. Each jar will encapsulate a singular, self-contained micronovel.
Francesco De Bernardi (b. 1995) is an artist based in Milan. He earned his BA in Visual Arts (2017) from NABA Milan and an MFA from ECAL in Lausanne. He has exhibited in contexts such as the Centre d'Art Contemporain in Geneva, Café des Glaces in Tonnerre, Peres Projects and Clima in Milan, and Binz 39 in Zurich.
Narrative systems lie at the core of Francesco De Bernardi’s practice, serving as a framework through which he intertwines everyday experiences and fictional stories. These systems manifest in the form of sculptures, texts, audio works, and drawings.
