At Liste, Yutaka Kikutake Gallery presents the work of Tomoya Matsuzaki and Kineta Kunimatsu, two artists whose practices traverse the boundary between painting and sculpture by considering their lived environments and the ecosystems that spread out around them.
Drawing on the practices of both artists, the presentation seeks to explore how extremely familiar phenomena contain aspects that shift toward universality, merging with the interior landscape of each viewer.
Kineta Kunimatsu (b.1977) is inspired by trees and their unique shapes formed over many years in the rugged northern landscape. He creates sculptures, paintings, and installations that investigate the contours and boundaries found in nature. His practice involves carving and burning the surfaces and interiors of wood, as well as working directly with minerals, snow, and other natural materials.
Tomoya Matsuzaki (b.1977) creates paintings on thick slabs of plaster that have been shaped and molded by the artist’s own hand. He is interested in “visually expressing the rhythms and their conditions that remain hidden in space,” his work is produced through overlaying both conscious and subconscious brushstrokes, and improvised movements.
