Daniel Wichelhaus has headed Société since 2011 following the collaborative Max Hans Daniel, which started organising projects in 2008. Société artists represent a generation rethinking the conditions of cultural production and consumption, identity, the circulation of information, and cultural history in an era of experience highly mediated by technology. The gallery emphasises exhibition making through pointed solo shows and ambitious presentations at leading art fairs. Edition Société, the gallery’s publishing initiative, has worked with numerous writers and designers, pushing the limits of what a gallery can produce and with whom.
Alongside artist's books and catalogues from gallery artists, it has undertaken a series of 12" records and live performances by contemporary music producers in an ongoing collaboration with Nic Xedro. In May 2014, Société presented the German premiere of Cory Arcangel’s "Dances For The Electric Piano" at the Berliner Philharmonie. At abc Berlin 2015, the gallery displayed a series of artist’s multiples and artist’s books. At Frieze New York in 2016, Société handed its booth over to gallery artist Sean Raspet in collaboration with Soylent, the US producer of the meal
replacement drink, and the Berlin-based fashion designer Nhu Duong. Also in 2016, Kaspar Müller’s book “Schätze der Erinnerung 2014–2015”, designed by Vela Arbutina, was awarded the prize for the Most Beautiful Swiss Books. Société has exhibited at Art Basel / Art Basel Miami Beach / Art Basel Hong Kong / Frieze London / Frieze New York / Independent New York / Independent Brussels / Art Cologne / Art Brussels / Gallery Weekend Berlin / abc Berlin / among others.
