In Selina Grüter and Michèle Graf’s performative practice, the modalities of performance itself come to the fore. Taking dialogue and its associated conflicts as a point of departure, the duo formulates a rhythmic system that intentionally integrates paradoxes. Dissonances here are not taken as failures, but rather as spaces of contingency that provoke semantic shifts through the dissolution of its form. Likewise, they are less interested in enacting the potentialities inscribed within the notation, than finding ways of releasing alternative, unforeseen potentialities. On the occasion of the 13th Performance Project, Selina Grüter and Michèle Graf will present a new work, ‘Contra Dance’, which draws on moments from the tradition of contra dance and accordingly organises the collective dances of pairs with the aid of a caller*. Their contra dance, however, applies pressure to the system of this performance and eventually leads to the disintegration of its social fabric.
* Caller: A person who prompts dance figures during the dance event.
